Direct Mail vs. Email

Which is better?  Each has their advantages and disadvantages.  Determining which is best for your organization depends on what is most important to you.  Let’s look at several factors.

COST:  By far, email is much less expensive.  The costs are so negligible, it doesn’t matter how low the response rate.  However, it’s also why spammers love it.  Thus it’s easy to get tossed aside for more recognizable emails from family, friends and coworkers.

SPEED:  Email is fast.  As soon as you’ve written your email and hit the send button, your prospect gets it almost immediately.   Mail can take several days or more.

PERCEPTION:  While people call direct mail “junk mail”, they view it much more favorable over “spam”.  Email messages also need to be short.  Recipients want information quickly.  A compelling direct mail piece can continue to engage their readers.  Readers will NOT stick with you in a long, though compelling, email.

Direct mail has been on the decline.  In Cox eLearning’s experience, email marketing has proven to be most efficient and least expensive.  While we are happy to assist with direct mail, rarely do we recommend it as the preferred method.
